During this time of year we get many calls from the find citizens of Philadelphia stuck outside their home or cars in the cold saying that all they did was put their key inside their lock and either it won’t budge or worse, the key snapped in half. Most locks have metal parts inside their cylinders; it’s enough to combine these parts with a bit of humidity and below zero temperatures and your locks starts to freeze, literally! So if you want to avoid this unpleasant experience and the need of calling a Philadelphia locksmith follow the tips and tricks we added here.
For starters never turn your keys right away like you normally do on these cold days and nights, you would be amazed at how easily your keys would snap in half. Instead; insert the key and just apply very little force when trying to turn it, if it won’t turn without applying more force, your lock could very well be frozen. In this case we recommend you stop by your local hardware store and get a spray can of De-icer. De-icer is a special formula made to both melt any ice that had formed inside your lock and lubricate it at the same time. You can actually use De-icer to melt ice that has built up on your windows and windshield as well. It would help if you sprayed De-icer in all your locks whether on your home or car, prior to letting your locks freeze, this will most likely prevent them from freezing in the first place. Make sure you spray right inside the center of your cylinder through the key hole using the straw provided with the spray can.
An additional note from our expert Philadelphia car locksmith, in extremely low temperatures not only the door locks can freeze, but also the ignition and other lock mechanism parts in the doors. If you see that you’re expecting some out of the ordinary cold weather you may want to spray your locking mechanism in your door as well. This is something you won’t be able to reach without removing the door panel first. This requires some work but you will be sorry if you wake up in the morning unable to open your car door.
Here are a few additional tips you can use to protect your car in general from some of the winter hazards:
You can keep your car headlights clear by using car wax, simply wipe regular car wax on your headlights; car wax contains special water repellents that will keep your headlights nice and clear and usually has a lasting effect of between one to two months.
Tired of hearing your wipers squeaking? Simply wipe them with some either rubbing alcohol or ammonia; this can silence your wipers almost completely in most cases.
Spray vinegar and water (3 parts vinegar and 1 part water) and your windows for an entire night, this will prevent your windows from icing up and save you the time and trouble of scraping the ice off in the morning.
